As the official launch of the Scion FT-86 approaches this fall, details about the final production version are starting to slip out. We may have a clearer picture of what the 2012 FT-86 will bring to the table when the production version of the Scion FT-86 finally arrives. A few scans of a purported Toyota training manual on the Scion FT-86 have made their way into the hands of the internet via the FT86Club.com forum.
Then more details come from Moto Miwa, the founder of Club4AG, a site dedicated to the AE86 (the car that inspired the Scion FT-86 ), after a conversation with Chief Engineer Tada-san and having seen what he claims is the final production version of the new 2012 Scion. The design is said to be closer to the original Scion FT-86 Concept, with a few details from the Scion FR-S Concept. The Scion FT-86 specs will look identical in all markets, apart from different badging – with the U.S. market model sold as the Scion FR-S.
Miwa describes how the Scion FT-86 was built with tuners and racers in mind, with spaces near the dash so a roll cage can be installed while keeping the dash intact. The Scion FT-86 engine mounts and space under the hood will also make for an easy swap of a turbocharged Subaru boxer engine, should you want to go that route.
“Never before, has such low-cost niche-car seen so much research, so much development budget and resourced with so many talents,” says Miwa, who then quotes Tada-san, who describes the Scion FT-86 as a car endorsed by Akio Toyoda and designed by passion, not a committee.
The Scion FT-86 specs sheet has been leaked, and the results are either promising, or disappointing, depending on what you were expecting. The 2660-lb Scion FT-86 will produce 197-hp and 151 lb-ft of torque from its Subaru-sourced 2.0-liter F-4. The Japanese-market spec sheet that the members of the Scion FT-86 Club came across not only leaks the Scion’s output, but also some of the trim levels JDM Toyota FT-86’s will have.
From the looks of it, the Scion FT-86 will have three trim levels. The top of the line Scion FT-86 (likely the Subaru FRS) will weigh in around 2700 lbs with a six-speed manual transmission, and will feature 17-inch wheels, front and rear ventilated disc brakes, and a limited-slip differential – among interior add-ons like carbon fiber trim.
Competitors Scion FT-86
The other interesting tidbit from the Scion FT-86 specs sheet leak is who Toyota sees as its competitors. Organized in an easy-to-read (if you can read Japanese that is,) comparison chart, the high and low of the Scion FT-86 specs are put against the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Mazda RX-8, and Honda CR-Z. But either way, we see the introduction of Scion FT-86 lightweight, compact, rear-drive sports coupes as a positive development. Meanwhile, the Scion FT-86 price will be expected to start at $25000 in the United States.
With power output more or less comparable with its competitors, the Scion FT-86 most important stat is its power-to-weight ratio of 13.56 lbs per hp; that’s better than the Miata (14.52 lbs per hp), the CR-Z (21.85 lbs per hp), and only slightly worse than the RX-8 (12.66 lbs per hp). While 197-hp and 151 lb-ft of torque might seem a bit underwhelming to some, don’t forget that the Scion FT-86 going to have a cousin over at Subaru producing “less than 300-hp” for those that ‘need’ more power, but how much more power the Subaru FRS version will have, if any, remains a mystery.
FT-86 may become Scion FT-S
