The Infinity Q50 is one of the most harmonious among the premium class cars
Sedan Infinity Q50 seems to be like with us and at the same time it is not: the model is rarely seen on the roads. But why? High price, bad engine, stiffer suspension? Or all at once ? During the weekly acquaintance with the car, I got to know it better … However, “stop”: you already know the summary from the headline, and if you need more details, then welcome to the article!
Infinity Q50 belongs to the D-Premium segment: luxurious sedans of the middle class with a length of 4.6-4.8 m, powerful engines, advanced equipment. Nominally it is Infinity Q50 of the first generation , but if you look into the history – you can find a lot of well-known predecessors. First of all, we are talking about the Infinity G-Series sedan of 2000-2010-ies: the longitudinal position of the V6 engine, rear or four-wheel drive. And if you look even further – back in the 1990s – you can even find the Infinity G20: a front-wheel drive sedan with a 2-liter engine, built on the basis of Nissan Primera. The result: on the whole – 25 years.
Nominally, the Infinity Q50 model has only one generation: the car appeared in 2013, then it went through a slight technical update and expansion of the motor range in 2016, finally, in 2017, it went through a planned facelift – the exterior (front bumper, taillights) and salon (new steering wheel). Though in general the history of D-Premium sedans from Infinity dates back to a quarter of a century, and the most ideologically close predecessor of the Infinity Q50 is the Infinity G-series of 2000-2010s.
There is Infinity Q50 with a 2-liter gasoline engine in the Sports configuration. There will also be other versions of the model.
How is the drive ?
Noble and luxurious. Infinity Q50 sedan doesn’t show itself immediately, you need to spend some time with it to fully understand the character.
For example, first of all I was expecting a powerful acceleration and tamping into the seat back from the “Sedan-Infiniti-turbo-fire”. But acceleration at low revs and with a smooth pressing of the accelerator pedal is especially soft and unhurried. However, let the motor rotate up to medium speed (3-4 thousand) – and the Infinity Q50 becomes pleasantly fast, dynamic. And the 4-6 thousand zone allows to “show you its teeth” : a dry, squeezed roar, a flashing landscape outside the window, excellent acceleration, which you don’t expect from a business sedan at all that just a minute ago was so obedient and quiet.
Moreover, all the processes and phases of overclocking flow into each other measuredly and linearly, there is no frankly a “bottom failure” and “an explosion above” – but here there is maximum flexibility of character in the operation of the engine and automatic transmission.
And what about the suspension? The test car was shod in 19-inch wheels and presented in the configuration SPORTs. What if the roads condition is considered ? Surprisingly, even the sports chassis on low-profile tires gives quite decent comfort: resilient, but without much shaking.
Other versions of the car go on 18-inch disks and with more high-profile tires (read the part about prices and versions of cars). Unusual steering with connection “through wires” is completely devoid of jerks due to roughness of the road, but filled with rather pleasant neutral effort – not hard, but not quite easy, just moderate. And the speed of car reactions to the steering wheel twisting is good, and the banks are scanty.
The Infinity Q50 sedan looks as noble as it drives : even in the sports version, it does not shake. And if you “push up the gas” – it can please you with tangible acceleration and fast steering with a light “entrance” of the nose into the turn and the possibility of exit under acceleration: a cool rear-wheel drive breed. The motto of the engine: the more turns – the better. The ride mode selection switch allows you to slightly “warm up” (SPORT) or put to sleep (SNOW) a car, affecting the engine, automatic transmission, and steering. There is no extreme SPORT + mode, it’s not a 405-strong Q60 coupe, but a dynamic premium Q50 sedan for every day.
To tell the truth, there are flaws in behavior of the Infinity Q50. For example, the “automaton” sometimes switches in low gears with barely noticeable kicks. Besides, nothing of these happens with a soft and slow drive or when accelerating “to the floor”, they are noticeable only when driving in the “half-pedal” and only when switching to the lowest gears (1-2 or 2-3). Or, if you get distracted , you can recognize the work of the DAS system: with the slightest deviation of the rudder, an effort occurs with a pause of half a second, sometimes the steering wheel deviates by a couple of degrees without appropriate wheel response.
But believe me: the character of the Infinity Q50 is so balanced and all-forgiving, at the same time dynamic and resiliently comfortable, that you will just drive and enjoy its versatility, without “catching the blunders”.
The situation with the interior is also good , but there is much more to say about the details. There are unambiguously cool solutions such as crescent-marked areas for the driver and front passenger, beautiful and clear devices, comfortable sports seats (even with adjustable side support).
However, the layout of the centre console with two displays seems frustrating, they often glare, and if not – then they collect prints on its surface. Someone is looking for (and finds) buttons from the mass models of Nissan, but I find beautiful devices, my hand touches stylish corrugated washers to control the multimedia system and adjust the volume – and I remember the Volvo XC90 …
The front of the cabin is generally remembered by separate cockpits for the driver and passenger, comfortable seats, beautiful instruments, grooved handles- washers, cool steering. Although there are some remarks: for example, glare displays and intricate logic of managing them (I will tell below, see the part about innovations).
There is enough space for two people in the back: without abundance, but there is enough room for legs, there is a space for head, the width of the royal expanse. But the central tunnel is massive and clearly interferes with the third passenger. And heaped rear roof rack along with a low landing of the car itself require a decent tilt. And for the convenience of the rear passengers there are ventilation deflectors, armrest, cup holders … Well, that’s all. Oh yeah – the trunk is: quite large, spacious. But it is deprived of shelves-niche-hooks, in the underground there is only a minimal organizer for road trifles, there is no “reserve”.
I admit, I sometimes used to call the Q50 “bachelor sedan.” Since between this model and the family Infinity QX60 (it also left a pleasant impression of “Infinity new wave”), there is not just a tangible difference, it’s simply a real gulf in the worldview on the car manufacture. However, as part of its class “D-Premium sedan” , Infinity Q50 gives exactly what you expect from it. Just a little pity that it is not trying to jump higher in matters of arrangement of the rear of the cabin and trunk.
It is quite spacious behind, there are ventilation deflectors, an armrest and cup holders, a hatch in the trunk. The latter is nominally large (500 l), but it cannot offer a good organization of a place, smooth walls (look at the developed wheel arches), an organizer in the underground. In short, the shape was originally dictated by the suspension and the undercarriage, and only then practicality. Conclusion: a car for driving pleasure, and not for transporting things.
Is there any innovation?
The Infinity Q50 sedan has become for the company a sort of bridge from the past to the future: here you can find both the groundwork of the past models and the new, even openly innovative solutions. Part of the technology was disassembled on the example of other Infinity cars, so I will tell you only about the basics and will give references to past materials. So, the basis of the Infinity Q50 is the FM (Front Midship) platform, i.e. longitudinal arrangement of the motor with a strong displacement in the center of the wheelbase, rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with an emphasis on the rear axle, wheelbase 2,850 mm, independent suspension at the front and rear.
This platform became the basis for Infinity cars in the early 2000s. However, the platform gradually evolved and changed, allowing you to create completely different models: for example, the business sedan Infinity Q70 and sports coupe Infinity Q60, crossovers Infinity FX and EX, sports cars Nissan 350Z and 370Z, etc. However, the FM platform can not be called the elderly one – after all, it is still “in the ranks” and even allows you to install a lot of modern equipment: starting from active cruise control, continuing with the emergency braking system, ending with the function of controlling the lane number of movements – all this was described using the example of Infinity Q70.
And it was the Infinity Q50 sedan that became the debut performance of a radical innovation in the automotive world – the DAS (Direct Adaptive Steering) system or, more simply, “the steering wheel by wire”. In the normal driving mode, there is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels: the steering wheel only acts on the unit that reads information about the steering angle, then the command is transmitted to electric actuators – and they turn the wheels.
The system has a backup controller in case of a sudden failure of the main unit, plus a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels in case of a complete DAS failure. What are such difficulties for ? what is the DAS system for? Firstly, it allows you to change not only the force on the steering wheel (the steering wheel becomes “lighter” or “heavier”), but also its sharpness (i.e. the angle of rotation of the wheels is relative to the angle of rotation of the steering wheel, the gear ratio between them), and in the widest range.
Secondly, it is easier to implement the steering function in your lane and automatic parking as well. Third – this system will allow you to completely remove the unpleasant parasitic twitching steering while driving on a bumpy road. DAS steering can be configured through the Infinity Drive Mode Selector ride menu. The DAS system was described in detail on the example of the Infinity Q60 coupe.
At the heart of the Infinity Q50 there is the FM platform: a longitudinal engine layout, rear-wheel drive, independent suspensions around the circle. The radical innovation of the Infinity Q50 is the DAS system or the “wheel by wire”. Infinity Drive Mode Selector settings allow you to choose the overall character of the car (normal, winter, sports), as well as directly affect the steering of the DAS, choosing the force and “sharpness” of the steering wheel. Individual mode allows you to completely collect the character of the car according to your requirements. In the course of the latest updates of the Q50 sedan, the “software” of the DAS system was rewritten, while the chassis system settings were slightly changed.
Under the hood of the test car Infinity Q50 there is a 2-liter gasoline turbo engine, which works along with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Where did Infinity get that engine with automatic transmission ? From Mercedes-Benz and there is no doubt about it, if we carefully consider the engine compartment: you may often find a 3-ray star there and the inscription Mercedes-Benz.
Speaking about details, this is the engine of the M274 family: a combination of a turbine and direct fuel injection, a system for changing valve timing (intake and exhaust shaft), there is a Stop / Start. This power unit was described on the example of the Infinity QX30, however, in the case of the younger model, 7-st. robotic automatic transmission- “preselective” (i.e., robotic automatic transmission with two separate clutches), but the Infinity Q50 has classic 7-speed “Automatic transmission” with a torque converter and a planetary gear selection mechanism. It is easy to guess that the automatic transmission also belongs to a Mercedes.
By the way, Infinity Q50, depending on the market and year of production of the car, was offered earlier or is offered now with different motors and types of drive. So, in the assortment of Infinity Q50 you can find: a 170-strong diesel (also Mercedes), a hybrid version based on a 3.5-liter gasoline V6 engine, a powerful (405 hp) version with a 3-liter V6 engine and four-wheel drive.
Under the hood – a gasoline 2-liter 211-horsepower turbo engine, paired with him 7-st. “machine”. It is a modern and proven technique from Mercedes – is it bad? In the future, waiting for the V6 at 405 hp and four-wheel drive.
Finally, a few words about the electronic “stuffing” in the cabin of Infinity Q50. Just like in the Infinity Q60 coupe, everything is built around two displays: the upper one is responsible for navigation, all-round visibility, on-board computer data; the lower one is the control of the audio system, climate, and car settings. To be honest, there are a lot of remarks : the upper display is quite bad in its resolution and now, on the background of the excellent lower display, it has become even more noticeable. There are separate physical buttons for seat heating, but the heating intensity is not visible on them – this information is displayed on the pop-up window of the upper display.
A heated steering wheel can only be enabled from the “climate page” of the lower screen. Still not confused ? OK, let’s continue: on the upper display you can choose separate windows, the choice of which is controlled by the joystick behind the automatic transmission lever – well, hello, the third interface control element. It is strange how confusing everything is – and I would be glad to say that I got used to it in a week, but it wouldn’t be true. Though the real owner, who will use the car for a long time, will probably get used to it.
But some things are implemented very well. For example, there are separate physical climate control buttons: temperature, airflow, recirculation; The “climate” screen should only be accessed if detailed settings are necessary. Another example – there are three physical buttons for selecting the display mode for the lower display: climate, audio, “home” (menu). And there are also the usual buttons for controlling the audio system: switching tracks or the radio, adjusting the volume, plus there are control buttons on the steering wheel. In short, if you like to “dig” in the settings – then the interface clearly does not show simplicity. But if we talk about using the most necessary functions, then everything is simple and clear.
The center console is built around two displays and, at first glance, it’s not easy to cope with them. But if we talk about the most popular functions – climate, audio system, map, all-round view – then on the whole, everything is logical and understandable. However, it’s not about “ easy to understand” issue, this is all about “why such remarks arise for a car at the price of 1 million UAH, which belongs to the highly competitive D-Premium class”
Prices and rivals.
Infinity Q50 PURE for 854 thousand UAH opens the range (about $ 30 thousand): stabilization system, six airbags (including side curtains), halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights, 18-inch wheels, dual exhaust, 2-zone “climate”, sports steering wheel “in genuine leather”, two touchscreens in the cabin, aluminum trim, upholstery “fabric / eco-leather.”
The next option is the LUXE package, which adds at least all-leather upholstery. LUXE offers five additional packages with plenty of interesting stuff: navigation, LED headlights, adaptive lighting system, electric drive and seat memory, electric steering column, all-round view on four cameras around the perimeter of the car.
Finally, the highlight is PROPILOT ASSIST: a complex of driving assistance: intelligent adaptive cruise control, control of lane rows and warning of leaving one’s own line, emergency braking function, monitoring of “blind zones” in the mirrors. Depending on the choice of additional equipment packages (or lack thereof), the Infinity Q50 LUXE is estimated $ 33-39 thousand.
A separate version of the Infinity Q50 SPORT has been distinguished, there are also several additional equipment packages for it. All versions of SPORT comprise: the original front bumper with a different grille, a sports rear bumper with a diffuser in body color, a DAS system (“steering through the wires”) and Active Line Control (active retention of the car within its range). Considering the optional equipment packages for the Infinity Q50 SPORT, the following are suggested: navigation, adaptive lighting, BOSE audio system, sunroof, all-round visibility. Price about $ 37.5-41 thousand.
There is a couple of examples on the comparative photos. The article presents the Infinity Q50S (SPORT, red car): it has an original body kit, its own radiator lattice, 19-inch wheels, and also a DAS system. It’s a pity, but you can’t get, for example, an active “cruise” and emergency braking warning function for this car. Options LUXE (silver car) offers more modest exterior, 18-inch wheels, a lot of additional equipment packages.
But even the basic version of PURE is good (and does not look like economy variant, as some German rivals do): a 2-zone climate, complex headlights (albeit an ordinary halogen), dual exhaust. By the way, PURE accounts for 34% of sales in the model range, for all LUXE options – 41% (which is expected), for all SPORT options – 25%: sales were divided approximately evenly, i.e. Each version turned out to be well-balanced and found its client.
And now a few words about competitors. First of all, the main rivals of the Infinity Q50 is the famous German top three: Audi A4, BMW 3-series, Mercedes C-class. They should also join a couple of sedans for those, who want to look more original and are not afraid of it: Lexus IS, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Jaguar XE.
The strong side of the Germans – a great assortment of engines and versions: gasoline or diesel, single-axis or full drive, configuration can be collected point by point. By the way, this is exactly what enables to set the price for “German” D-Premium models , which is noticeably lower than the Infinity Q50 price. But if you only try to “assemble” a car comparable to the Infinity Q50, then you’ll get a completely different story. I will give two examples. First: we take near-base Infinity Q50 for 850-900 thousand UAH. – competitors for the same money will be with a small engine (1.4-1.5 liters capacity of about 150 hp) and hardly on steel wheels with hubcaps. The second: we take competitors with a 180-190 hp engine, with a 2-zone “climate” and LED headlights, a large display in the cabin, upholstered “fabric / leather” or completely leather. In this case, the car will cost 1.05-1.4 mln. – And for this money you can buy the Infinity Q50 in the maximum configuration with a full set of equipment packages. But there is also a number of other remarks: for example, almost all the “Germans” appear to have the same cabin or even closer than that of the Infinity Q50, some of them drive harder, others are already on the verge of change of generations, which means they will soon lose relevance.
Nominally, the closest rivals of the Infinity Q50 should be Lexus IS and Alfa Romeo Giulia: initially the 200 hp engine and more, the package bundle “quite enough”, the price tag below the German premium models. But even in this case, Lexus IS and Alfa Romeo Giulia with prices starting about 1.1 million UAH. turn out to be more expensive than Infinity Q50. Moreover, with respect to Alfa Romeo Giulia, though the Infinity Q50 may not cause so much passion when driving to the limit, but it knows how to live in two worlds: every day, calmly and comfortably it will drive you to work, on weekends or on vacation it will please you with its dynamic drive.
Briefly: Infinity Q50 can be called one of the most lucrative offers in the class – the optimal set , consisting of brand name, engine, “automatic transmission”, configuration, status, size, interior space … there is a problem – there are no cheap versions to attract clients with a low price, there is no powerful version (we are waiting for the V6!) to attract rather sophisticated customers “with money”.
Cost of maintenance
The average fuel consumption in the city was 10-11 liters per 100 km, but on empty roads on weekends and with a smooth drive, it was possible for a car to consume 9 liters of fuel – i.e. even a little less than expense indicated in passport. But if you are going to break bad – then get ready to consume about 13-14 liters per 100 kilometers. On a highway at a speed of 80-90 km / h, the car consumes about 5.5 liters of fuel, at a speed of 110-120 km / h, the consumption increases to 6.5-7 liters of fuel per 100 km. The warranty on the car is three years or a 100 thousand kilometers. The frequency of inspection – once a year or 10 thousand km.
Prices for the car and maintenance are indicated as of September, excluding additional discounts and promotions that are valid when buying a car or servicing it.
In short: for me personally the Infinity Q50 has become one of the biggest, most joyful, memorable revelations of 2018! This is a premium sedan, which is equally well able to drive fast or “quiet / comfortable”; it costs only slightly more expensive than conventional D-class models, while allowing you to enter the world of “premium” and, at the same time, declare yourself as an original person. A well-balanced model, in which the high class and thorough “polishing of character” by caring creators are represented here. Summing up info about the Infinity Q50 in a couple of words, these will be – the “wonderful car.”
+ great exterior, offers a good finish inside – even in basic versions
+ Amazingly able to combine a lively “driver’s” character, acceptable comfort, silence
+ A brand that is both “premium” and “original” for modest price
– There is no choice of engines and drive type – we hope that soon it will appear
“Why is interface so inconvenient in use ?” Of course it’s a matter of habit, but still…
