Honda CR-V crossover offers a spacious cabin for a big family, a huge trunk, decent design and quality of interior decoration. Then why doesn’t this model fill all the yards of new buildings? In this review, we’ll talk about the nuances around the Honda CR-V and even look into the future of the model.

Honda CR-V crossover is one of the founders of the crossover class in general! The first generation of the model appeared in 1995 and was created on the platform of the Civic model. However, unlike the progenitor, the Honda CR-V model has never striven to be a “sports car for the people” – on the contrary, it always focused on the spaciousness of the cabin and the large trunk, the versatility of driving quality. In other words, it’s a “perfect family crossover” in Honda’s vision. The next generations of the model – the second (2002), the third (2007), the fourth (2013) – only developed this approach. And it is successful with customers: Honda CR-V model is in the TOP-10 of the most popular cars in the world, for many years it has been one of the best-selling crossovers of its class. However, there are specific moments …

The first generation Honda CR V appeared in 1995, the second generation (2002) became an evolutionary development. However, in the third generation (2007), the car acquired a new design, a drastically modified interior, we officially had 2.4 l versions as in the USA: Honda CR — V tried to make half a step over competitors. Including the price. Though in 2006-2008 it was permissible and the car came in. However, the fourth generation (2013) turned out to be incomprehensible: clearance of 165 mm, high price, 2-liter engine…

The fifth-generation car, which is described in the review, originally debuted in the United States at the end of 2016, sales started in 2017. At the same time, fourth-generation cars that are produced in Europe remained on sale: the fifth-generation Honda CR-V will debut there this autumn. And after that, all European markets will receive the same European versions of cars: we are waiting for a 1.5-liter turbo engine, an active “cruise”, a row control system – I’ll tell you about it in detail below.

How is the driving?

On the whole, not bad. For example, at overclocking, the crossover Honda CR-V feels faster and more dynamic than most of similar models with 2.4-2.5-liter 170-180-horsepower engines. Moreover, the consistency and linearity of the engine  responses to the accelerator pedal push is maintained in a wide range – from the very “bottom” (1-1.5 thousand) to average high 4.5 thousand engine speed: this is a zone in which you “work” most often during a real driving. And when maneuvering the Honda CR-V on the assembled suspension, it turns quite readily : the average rolls, the neutral behavior in the bend, can be tightened. However, there is some duality in behavior.

For example, the steering wheel is initially very light in a near-zero position and with small deviations, but with a strong turn it is filled with weight. Another example: the suspension on a bit uneven surface pleases with softness, but when you drive through the middle holes or speed bumps you can get a tangible “kick.” And, getting used to the original softness of the chassis, you just do not understand – “ why”? But if you start driving more dynamically, load the suspension when braking and turning, then everything becomes more unambiguous. In extreme cases, you understand why such a dense suspension: so as not to turn the car into a “jelly” on a very soft suspension, which is the case with some competitors.

Honda CR — V looks great: bright and interesting, without defiant details. In short, the look was a success – obviously the car from the new era of crossovers. However, the settings of the engine, chassis, steering did not make a similar step “to a new level”: everything is not bad, but without revelations. The engine is remembered by a good traction in the most popular working range, the CVT-variator gets along well with it: a smooth and measured driving is clearly its strong point.

There is a sport mode, but the whole character of the Honda CR — V is  that you can only “warm up”, not ignite. The “ECON” button, on the contrary, slightly reduces the speed of reactions to pressing the accelerator pedal, but even in this mode,  Honda CRV offers ample dynamics at the level of most rivals.

But the point is: offering a slightly more dynamic character regarding relatively large family crossovers, the Honda CR-V model plays at the same level with them in matters of the cabin. And here, literally everything is good. The front is a great finish: I see and feel soft plastic of inserts imitating wood , imitation of a seam .

The whole picture is good: a large display and clear graphic lines give the feeling of novelty. In the driver’s hands – a steering wheel with a comfortable rim and excellent leather. In front of your eyes – stylish LCD-based devices and a color retractable HUD-display. And the lever of the automatic transmission on the pedestal of the center console left space for a large box-organizer between the front seats.

The main thing in the cabin as well as in the exterior is a sense of novelty and good quality in the complete absence of annoying details. The steering wheel is good for everyone: the thickness and shape of the rim, the quality of leather, comfortable buttons. Volume control – touch or tactile (should be pressed on the edge of the regulator). Devices, based on LCD display, look great, read instantly, give a lot of useful information. Seats are good with load distribution and (surprisingly) sufficient lateral support. The lever “machine” on the pedestal allowed to give the center console more space for all sorts of niche-holders, shelves. Front of the cabin can be praised.

And the back of the cabin deserves a compliment for space and convenience. After all, for passengers of the second row there is a generous number of seats: as if it is a crossover with the length of 4.8 meters – and here, I remind you, less than 4.6 meters. If you are expecting much space in width and height, then the “football field” for legs and almost flat floor will pleasantly surprise you. Plus there are many various trifles: adjusting the angle of inclination of the seat back, 3-stage heating, ventilation deflectors, a pair of USB-connectors (and a couple more in front), armrest with cup holders.

Against this background, the trunk is good in capacity, rectangular shape, large loading opening. Plus, there is a couple of niches for trifles, a handle for folding the rear seats out of the luggage compartment, and an electric cover. All that you can wish for is organizer shelves and sensory opening with a wave of your foot.

Surprisingly spacious car: with a relatively average 4.6-meter length, Honda CR — V offers a spacious cabin of large 4.8-meter models. Almost all the details for passengers have been worked out: huge doors open almost 90 degrees, there is a back angle adjustment and heated seats, there are ventilation deflectors and USB connectors. The trunk lacks such a detailed study, but it is good: a large useful capacity, a huge loading opening.

Are there any innovations?

The fifth generation Honda CR-V received the original body (the fourth generation was a deep modernization of the third), which is 25% composed of high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels. Nominally, the chassis migrated from the fourth generation car: MacPherson independent suspension in front, independent multi-link suspension behind.

But in detail there are plenty of differences : the mounting of the springs and shock absorbers in the rear suspension has changed, the clearance has noticeably increased (it was 165-180 mm, now 208 mm), the wheelbase has grown. Atmospheric 2.4-liter gasoline engine series K24 is installed under the hood of the test car. For lovers of innovation – direct injection into the cylinders, the i-VTEC variable valve timing system. For lovers of “oldschool” solutions – “chain” drive timing and the possibility of refueling with 92 gasoline.

Along with the engine a company CVT variator works: a torque converter at the junction of the engine and the variator, plus a wedge mechanism – a pair of moving discs and a steel chain. Electric power steering and all-wheel drive clutch with electric control appeared earlier, but they were modified.

By the way, I’ll pay attention to the 4WD E-DPS all-wheel drive coupling: after all, the original design from Honda is used here. The first generations Honda CR-V applied all-wheel drive clutch with hydraulic control. The fluid pressure in the system was created by two pumps: one of them was connected to the drive shaft of the front wheels, the second – to the rear wheels. If both shafts rotated simultaneously, the pressure in the system was balanced, the clutch was in the open position.

If the wheels were slipping, then the pumps worked separately, there was a different pressure in the two circuits: as a result, the coupling closed, actually acting as a lock of the central differential. Starting from the fourth generation, an electric pump appeared in this system, which pumps the working fluid. And, of course, to the fifth generation, the all-wheel drive clutch was refined: a new “soft” control, the pressure of the system increased. As a result, the four-wheel drive now works preventively (the car starts in 4WD mode), the size of the transmitted torque to the rear wheels is also increased.

The body is completely new, chassis and all-wheel drive are modified. Under the hood – an atmospheric 2.4-liter K24 engine paired with a company CVT-variator. The all-wheel drive system has received an updated clutch and “soft”. It is a pity that it is not possible to block the clutch preventively, with the touch of a button, you can only track the flow of torque between the axles. But, to honour of the Honda CR — V, this car successfully passed two comparative tests: SUV & Snow and SUV & Sand (out of the test only in the forest): a lot of them slip in snow and mud, but short overhangs and 208 mm of ground clearance help on the offroad.

Unfortunately, Honda CR-V cannot boast with abundance of electronic systems to help the driver: active cruise control, a line tracking system, auto-switching of near / far headlights, reading road signs are part of this equipment that will appear only with the start of deliveries of turbo versions. As a result, while the Honda CR-V offers all-LED headlights (low and high beam), the Honda Connect multimedia system, as well as the LANEWATCH.

The latter is a camera in the right rear-view mirror: it transfers the image to the central display in the cabin and allows you to view the “blind zone” on the passenger side of the car. This camera is turned on automatically when the right-hand turn indicator is switched on, the camera can also be activated by pressing a button at the end of the steering lever. In other words, there is such a substitute for the monitoring system of the “blind zones” of mirrors, it works for the right side only.

Yes, there are other remarks. When turning right, you have to look in different directions  –  you look at the mirror, then at the monitor in the cabin. In addition, why do I need a distracting picture when changing lanes on the road? If there are no cars nearby, the usual monitoring system of the “dead zones” is simply silent and does not blink, but in this case the camera will still switch on and show an empty road (although I note that in this situation the system can be turned off in the detailed settings of the car). In the pros of LINEWATCH – helps not only when changing lane, but in general in all cases when you need to look “what is there on right”: for example, with tight parking by the right side.

Fully LED headlights (low and high beam, direction indicators) perfectly illuminate the road. The LANEWATCH system is a side camera and a picture on the starboard side of the car: useful when changing lanes or parking. There is also a rear-view camera with multiple viewing options: standard, panoramic, close.

Finally, Honda Connect multimedia. Briefly: I consider only the menu of small “tiles” as some flaw, but I like other features – a cool, juicy, beautiful picture, good contrast, good resolution. It is nice that the touchscreen has not deprived us of the usual buttons and switches: for example, there is a separate climate control unit, there is a volume control. When “climate” is used, a separate window pops up, but also the selected temperature is always visible on the top line of the display. In addition to the standard navigation, there is also the ability to connect a smartphone (in the photo below – Apple CarPlay). These are trivialities that one overall positive impression about Honda Connect consists of.

Plus, there is the color projection display: driving speed, engine speed, navigation, audio control. You can control the display either from a separate button block or from the steering wheel.

Honda Connect multimedia was remembered by a good display, the ability to connect a smartphone, a separate page for climate control. The projection display in addition to the usual information “speed, navigation” also offers a tachometer scale and information from the audio system. Controls – from the hotel unit or buttons on the steering wheel spokes.

Prices and competitors

The basic version of Lifestyle for $ 37.9 thousand offers everything you need and even more: a stabilization system, six airbags, remote engine start with a remote control, an instrument panel with an LCD display, 2-zone “climate”, heated front seats, a system Honda Connect (7-inch touchscreen display), rear-view camera, parking sensors (front and rear), rain sensor, 18-inch wheels, LED headlights.

The next configuration – Executive for $ 40 thousand – adds to this: leather trim, electric adjustment and memory of seats, LANEWATCH system (control of the “blind” zone on the right), electric trunk lid. Finally, the maximum version of the Prestige, as a test car, priced at $ 43,000, additionally offers: a projection display, a subwoofer, navigation, a power sunroof, a chrome package.

Here usually goes an example of another version, but this time we will try to look into the future of the model.

There are so many competitors , more than enough: Mazda CX-5, Nissan X-Trail, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, SKODA Kodiaq, VW Tiguan, Subaru Outback, Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi Outlander, Renault Koleos. Plus, the model in the style of “half a grade lower, but equipment is better”: for example, Peugeot 3008, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Nissan Qashqai, KIA Sportage, Ford Kuga.

If we consider the car as a family crossover, and focus on the spaciousness of the cabin and the capacity of a trunk – then the Honda CR-V can quite successfully compete with the most spacious models in the class: Nissan X-Trail, Subaru Outback, Renault Koleos, SKODA Kodiaq. At the same time, Honda CR-V loses by the lack of diesel versions (Nissan, Renault, SKODA) or innovative equipment (Subaru, SKODA), but it beats almost all of the opponents on the road – it’s not a sports car, but it is more pleasant to drive at a relatively dynamic speed.

However, if you take crossovers for lovers of fast driving – the Mazda CX-5, Peugeot 3008, VW Tiguan – then the Honda CR-V no longer looks like a sports car against them, but it can offer a spacious interior (here is only a competitor  VW) and four-wheel drive ( Peugeot). If we talk about the availability of different versions, then Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Tucson “rule the ball”: though they don’t have  exquisite manners on the road, but the price is important,  Honda has the answer only in the form of the fourth generation CR-V with 2 litre engine. I would like to mention the older, but still popular Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester: they have good consumer qualities, though it is clear from their cabin that these are cars of past generations –  Honda CR-V is better.

Only direct competitors scored a dozen and a half, but there are still indirect in the style of “smaller, but cheaper” or “cooler, but more expensive.” And many offer the key advantages: diesel engines, advanced equipment and systems, low-cost versions. And here the task of the Honda CR — V is to literally pass through the “eye of the needle” on the way to the buyer, focusing on its advantages: the spaciousness inside, the trim, the large trunk, four-wheel drive, price-equipment ratio.

Cost of maintenance

In the city, the car consumes 11-12 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. With empty roads and smooth driving, fuel consumption can be reduced to 9-9.5 liters, with dynamic driving or a large number of traffic jams – consumption increases to about 13 liters of fuel per 100 km of track. On a highway at a speed of 80–90 km / h, the car consumes 6–6.5 liters of fuel, at a speed of 110–120 km / h, consumption increases by 1–1.5 liters – to about 7.5 liters per 100 km.

The general warranty for a car is three years or a 100 thousand km of run: the guarantee is limited to the point that comes earlier. Frequency of technical inspection – 15 thousand km or once a year. The minimum cost of standard maintenance is 3.4 thousand UAH. The exact cost of maintenance depends on the dealer, region and the necessary list of works with a specific car.

Honda CR-V crossover is a nice car: it offers a good balance of key consumer qualities. But it also cannot be called a class leader: it is inferior in dynamism to some rivals, to others in comfort,  in modern equipment,  in available versions,  in the assortment of diesel engines …

However, the situation with the Honda CR-V model does not turn out to be a “cry into the void,” as it happens with the Mitsubishi ASX, Hyundai Creta, and Toyota Highlander – not at all. Just the recipe for buying a Honda CR-V looks like “looked at a couple of models, all the advantages are on the CR-V side – so we bought it”, and it’s not like “I see Honda CR-V in my dreams, run to the salon”. This is a weighed decision, where the advantages of the car are important: the spaciousness of the cabin, a large trunk, interior trim. It is encouraging that during the expected update Honda CR-V crossover should keep its advantages and correct its weak points in order not to be worse than its rivals.
